In Loving Memory of Walter Lewis Jr.
December 7, 1940 – June 9, 2025

Walter Lewis Jr., age 84, of Clarksville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Ahava Healthcare of Clarksville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lewis Sr. and Velma Bean-Lewis, and his brothers, Samuel Lewis and Richard Lewis. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his children: Barbara Settles, Walter Lewis III, Molly Lewis-Beasley, and Keyvetta Sykes. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to thirteen.

Born in Sarasota, Florida, Walter graduated from the Saint Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind, a foundation that shaped both his identity and his mission. Embracing his deafness with pride, Walter became a lifelong advocate for the deaf community. He served with distinction as President of the National Black Deaf Association and remained a celebrated member throughout his adult life.

A man of many skills, Walter was an avid carpenter and gifted woodworker, having honed his craft under the guidance of his uncle, Horace Bean, at Horace Bean Construction. He later dedicated 40 years of faithful service to the United States Postal Service.

Walter was married to Margaret Campbell Lewis, with whom he shared three children. A man of deep faith, Walter instilled in his children a love for the Lord and was an active member of the Church of Christ in downtown Nashville, where he found both community and comfort.

Those who knew Walter remember him as a humble, devoted man who found joy in simple pleasures loving his family, traveling, serving others, and championing the rights and dignity of the deaf community.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff and nurses at Ahava Healthcare of Clarksville for their dedicated care and kindness during Walter’s final days.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored.
