Susie Brown Shimek

Susie Brown Shimek, 65, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on August 2nd, 2022, in Leesburg, Virginia. Susie Brown Shimek was born in Clarksville, Tennessee to Amy Jo Brown Sprinkle and Billy Gene Brown Sr. on August 12th, 1956. She attended Clarksville High School, Vanderbilt University, and Austin Peay State University. She began her career in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Division of Air Pollution Control. Later Susie had a 27-year career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During her distinguished tenure at the EPA, Susie worked tirelessly as a nationally recognized expert to reduce lung cancer deaths from radon. Most recently, she was promoted to a supervisory position and led national programs aimed at helping children with asthma by controlling indoor asthma triggers and improving indoor air quality in the nation's schools.

 

Susie Brown Shimek is preceded in death by her mother Amy Jo Brown Sprinkle, her father Billy Gene Brown Sr., and her mother-in-law Jean Shimek Monahan.

 

Susie Brown Shimek is survived by her son Jacob Covington Shimek, her brothers Billy Gene Brown Jr, Kirk and Todd Sprinkle, her sisters Vicki Brown Hughes and Linda Brown Murphy Scott, her other mother Elaine Hawkins, her father Larry Sprinkle, his wife Rosie, her nephews and nieces, Adam, Brian, and Aidan Hughes, Kala, Parker Jo, and Seth Murphy, Alex (Alexandria) Scott, Joe, Dustin, and Paul Shelby, her devoted cousin Gail Brown Williams, and devoted longtime friends Laura Snodgrass Pohlenz, Tracy Washington Enger, and Cindy Senick.

 

A memorial service will be held at Gateway Funeral Home on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. Following the memorial service, family, friends, and other loved ones are welcome to a fellowship gathering at the Clarksville Country Club from 1:00 - 4:00 P.M. to celebrate Susie's life, share stories and reminisce.
